INDIE YOUTH FEST 2008
In conjunction with the National Finals of the Electronic Sports World Cup 2008 Malaysia
Indie Youth Fest is a giant GiG that has come together as a result of many many Doppelganger Open Mic Open Stage gigs.
What is Doppelganger Open Mic Open Stage? www.doppelgangerkl.blogspot.com is the community project adopted by Go International Group Sdn Bhd – a marketing communication consultancy company based in Kuala Lumpur founded by Jasmine Low (Jaz) and Nikki Yeo. Both believe in contributing to a vibrant arts and music Malaysia by creating opportunities and a platform for singers, songwriters, poets, writers, dancers, illustrators, filmmakers to showcase their works.
Jaz started organising gigs and open mic sessions in 2002 after being inspired by Sunday evening gigs put together by shoe salesperson by day, amazing singer songwriter by night in Sydney, Australia. Originally named ‘Valhalla Open Mic’, Doppelganger Open Mic Open Stage has put together over 120 music gigs and readings at venues such as La Bodega Tengkat Tong Shin, No Black Tie, Jam Rock Asia, Paul’s Place, Liquid Bar, Alliance Francaise, Marketplace KL including larger shows like the all-women ‘Shanti Grrl Gig’ in conjunction with International Women’s Day in 2004, an all-women charity gigs for International Womens’ Day titled ‘Unleashing Potential’ in 2006 at No Black Tie to help raise money for House of Hope – an all girls’ shelter, ‘Music with the Stars’ in conjunction with the Malaysian International Aerospace Adventure 2007 Road Show at Midvalley Exhibition Centre. This year, Doppelganger will be putting together a giant gig under the guise of INDIE YOUTH FEST.
Here’s a little more history. From June 2005 to October 2006, the Troubaganger Shows (a collaboration between Doppelganger and Troubadours) provided monthly performances at La Bodega – a tapas bar located at Tengkat Tong Shin every first Sunday of the month. This was the kickstart for the Wayang Kata series of spoken word events initiated by British Council. At the end of 2006, Doppelganger opened Indie Scene Café, a two-month project, which provided a space for film screenings, gigs, art exhibits and retail outlet for Malaysian-made independent works like CDs, short films. Doppelganger continues to organise occasional gigs and readings around KL. If you know of any bathroom singers or office hummers, email us the suspects and we’ll get them up on stage. Email Jaz at openmickl@gmail.com.
The 2008 calendar has seen Doppelganger’s shows appear at No Black Tie and its new home, Marketplace KL at 4A, Lorong Yap Kwan Seng. This compilation of music offers a grand selection of non-genre specific indie music. If you like more, come support our gigs and buy an original CD!

ONE BUCK SHORT
Founded by Hafiz (previously on bass) and Rahul (guitars) in high school, this awesome foursome began their career playing shows at school events and battle of the bands competitions before coming out in the local scene with a handful of experience and a truckload of rockin’ songs that’ll definitely get you bopping, hopping and moshing non-stop. With a love for So-Cal Punk, One Buck Short has developed into one of the leading rock acts in the region.
Their debut single ‘That Day’ from their EP ‘Where Is The Mouse?!’ managed to break through to the Top 5 on the Hitz.fm Malaysian Top Ten with the band promoting their release with performances at both low-key underground shows as well as high profile shows such as ‘Rock the World IV’, ‘Rock the World V’ as well as the Asian X Games. The band was also nominated as the Best Newcomer artist in the first ever Hitz.FM Malaysian English Top 10 awards held in 2004. In 2006, the band was nominated again for ‘Best Rock’ and ‘Best Live Act’ in Malaysia. With the achievements of their independent EP, OBS have made a great impact to modern urban punk rock music by displaying powerful energetic stage performances that woe their audiences. Currently the band is putting finishing touches on their debut album under the hands of talented producer / arranger Greg Henderson. With the first English single, “FAST TIMES” and first ever Malay single by the band, “KELIBAT KORUPSI” blasting through the airwaves in Malaysia and Singapore, One Buck Short’s upcoming album, “HALAL & LOVING IT” is already regarded by many as one of the most anticipated releases of 2007.
Quote from MTV Asia Marketing and Communications Manager: “One Buck Short is power-packed urban punk rock, they represent the best in raw, home-grown talent – and with a litany of chart-toppers, awards and fans across the region to boot”. One Buck Short is also fresh of opening for Fall Out Boy in Singapore as part of the international rock bands only stop on their “Infinity on High” world tour early this year as well as an MTV LIVE production with Good Charlotte in Kuala Lumpur in April 2007. The band is also the only Malaysian act that performed at the inaugural Singapore Festival (SingFest 07) in August. This saw One Buck Short sharing the stage with current heavyweights in the industry like Sugar Ray, Gym Class Hero’s, The Academy Is, Hinder, MXPX and so much more. OBS ended 2007 with a bang, supporting My Chemical Romance for their show in Malaysia. Come 2008, One Buck Short will be looking to tour South East Asia to support their brand new release – Halal & Loving It.
ONE BUCK SHORT – HALAL & LOVING IT – HAS JUST BEEN RELEASED! LOOK FOR IT AT ALL GOOD RECORD STORES!
OBS was recently nominated for BEST ROCK and BEST LIVE ACT for the Malaysian English Top 10 awards.

SUPERBAR
Superbar is a pop rock/power pop band based in Kuala Lumpur. Fronted by sometime singer-songwriter Chak with lead guitarist Bala, eclectic rockers Superbar came together in 2004. Bala placed a classified ad, Chak answered and the rest is history. Beginning its life as an acoustic act, Superbar’s sound has evolved through several line-up changes. They’re happy with the current line-up, which is the tightest its ever been and features Chak and Bala along with Sen Kiat on guitar, Suren on bass and Dinesh hammering the drums. Drawing from influences that include Coldplay, Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms and John Mayer, the group dishes out radio-friendly pop rock with a touch of blues and lashings of funk.

TEMPERED MENTAL
Tempered Mental is vocalist/bassist Melina, drummer Jimmy and guitarist Jack. There’s one thing, which sets Tempered Mental apart from its peers and that is, how the band sounds; an eclectic mix of styles and influences performed with progressive rock panache and always kept together by Melina’s memorable vocal melodies.
Tempered Mental launches its brand new website at the Indie Youth Fest 2008 on 5 July 2008; and lends its song ‘Design’ as the official theme song for the Electronic Sports World Cup 2008 Malaysia.
ESTRELLA (BAND)
Estrella is Liyana at the mike and on acoustic guitar, Adzwan (Yob) on electric guitar, Jefrey Little on drums and Shamsul Idzwan on percussions. Having made their mark at the Global Battle of the Bands 2007, where they ended up being the National Finalist for Malaysia, Estrella has been around for two years, but are quickly making up for lost time.
OH CHENTAKU! (BAND)
www.myspace.com/ohchentaku
‘Oh Chentaku‘ roughly translate to “Oh My Love” in english with the word ‘cinta‘ spelled the old way. Their music can be classified as ‘90s post-hardcore / emo rock’. The band has played in a large number of shows around Malaysian. Even around South East Asia and a successful Indonesian tour. Their unique blend of genres captures the attention of both hardcore music fans as well as indie acoustic music fans. The trio is made up of vocalist and guitarist Myo, bassist Naem and drummer Adib, all still in their early 20s.
GREEN PAVER
Syafiq, Cherry and Edy met with one another in Ipoh, where most genuine independent music band originated. In fact Syafiq is considered as the mentor of the band who looks for his apprentices. Kuala Lumpur was the place where they witnessed each other forming a great band. Back in December 2005; Syafiq received a wake up call from Billy regarding his ‘activeness’ in the music scene. Billy’s invitation to join one of their gigs in Singapore was the starting point to make Green Paver a reality. Now, Green Paver plays with solo gigs alongside with their side project band around Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
ARMY OF THREE (BAND)

Army of Three consists of Jeff on lead vocals and guitars, Alex on guitars and backing vocals, Eddy on the drums and Darren on bass and backing vocals. Army of Three is a band about the Power of Trinity, which represents the band’s faith and background. Formed in early 2005, the band members met through a church event. Since then, the band has come a long way, playing at various local events. Starmaker decided to sign up the band in their first venture as a new recording label. With a blend of positive, inspiring lyrics, and fresh, vibrant, cutting edge rock music combined with explosive live performances, the band is striving to make a difference and influence the youth in the right way.
AN HONEST MISTAKE
With pure honesty and heartfelt emotions about life and relationships, An Honest Mistake was birthed. Apart from playing bass with Armyofthree, this is a place where Darren Teh picks up his acoustic guitar and puts himself in the shoes of many to let his mind wander, wonder and explore the different facets of life. Darren started writing 2 years ago and has had plenty of time to perfect his craft and finally allowing himself to break out into actually performing. Open up your minds and allow your dreams to be ‘An Honest Mistake’.
MIA PALENCIA
Mia Palencia is a singer songwriter, jazz crooner, voice actor, public speaker and occasionally a theatre personality, Mia Palencia is a woman of many talents. She kicked off her career as the other half of well-known local jazz act Double Take at the age of 14, with whom she has released two albums. She sung for kings, travelled the world as a public speaker and a vocalist, and, most recently, exploring the world of cartoons as a voice actor. Mia released her first solo single, ‘Sayang’ in September 2006. Her first solo album, ‘Finding My Way’, has been released in digital format on www.popfolio.net/miapalencia and is available from MPH and several other stockists since April 2008.
ZALILA LEE (SINGER SONGWRITER)
Singer songwriter with the sweetest of voices, Zalila Lee performed at the media launch of ESWC 2008 Malaysia. She even made up an ESWC song on the spot! Talk about improvisation! Zalila is no stranger to the indie scene. But she’s rather shy. Having played numerous gigs at No Black Tie, Zalila recently teamed up wtih Rafique Rashid at a surprise jam at KL’s favourite jazz bar and left guests astounded with a dynamic set.
YUNA (SINGER SONGWRITER)
www.myspace.com/yunaroomrecords
Check out her myspace account and you’ll find that Yuna reckons she’s “…an average dork who writes songs…a simple person who likes simple things in life. Like Nescafe…”.
YURI WONG
Known for his ability to rock out (with the band Frequency Cannon) as much as playing intricate, guitar-driven acoustic solo sets, Yuri is as versatile as they come. Preferring the guitar but perfectly capable of carving out tunes on the piano, Yuri composes his own songs, as well as songs for other artistes/productions. He meditates often to understand the true nature of the universe. Yuri has played numerous shows at No Black Tie, Laundrybar (Moonshine), Starbucks (Acoustic Series) and many more. Yuri also regularly blogs, and his music is available for download at his website.
REZA SALLEH
Bombarded with copious amounts of Top 40 gamma rays as a child, Reza owe much of her young singing career to the Seattle sounds of Nirvana, the rap-rock edge of Rage Against the Machine, the vocal stylings of Black American vocalists, and a whole list of other musical influences she’s been exposed through her career.
“The stuff I write is a mish-mash of elements drawn from a combination of whatever’s going on in my head and whatever I’ve been listening to in the past 10 years or so. Dark, heartfelt, confused. Best served with coffee.” - Reza Salleh.
Reza is also the Founder and Organiser of the Moonshine series of gigs.
ADY SUWARDY
Malaysian/Javanese descent vocalist Ady Suwardy started out late in the music business. Multi-talented Ady is an Interior Designer by profession and a part-time DJ in the government radio station Voice of Malaysia which broadcasted all around the world. He grew up listening to his parents’ selection of music from the 70’s like Uji & Hail, Sharifah Aini, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. 80’s music filled up his teens with Bonnie Tyler, Francisca Peter, Sheila Majid and Whitney Houston as his favourites. At the age of 17 he was exposed to the many type of music while working part-time for a music school but little that he knew at that time that his voice is also an instrument. Though he loves music and singing just for fun he never really knew at that time that he could sing. It was at an event that his talent was discovered when he had to sing to replace a singer. From then on with courage from family and friends he tried a few singing competitions just to see where he stood and finally emerged as the winner of Juara Popular THR.fm 2003 singing contest beating more than a thousand contestants. He never looked back since and started taking singing and vocal lessons besides trying his skill in song composition. The year 2008 will see him coming out with an album with 6 out of 10 songs written and co-written by him. His love to classics, jazz and R&B influenced his music which is pop with a twist of jazz. He has been singing at many gigs around Kuala Lumpur under the umbrella of Valhalla and Doppleganger and also made an appearance as a guest singer at his idol, Francisca Peter’s show in No Black Tie, Kuala Lumpur. Watchout out Ady Suwardy with his first soon to be released single Izinkanlah and his first album Masih Ada Waktu – Better Late Than Never.
OTAM AND NOVAK
Otam and Jason Novak have their regular jamming sessions at the house behind karma since early May 2006. Their music is created via a mic condenser and a sony minidisc recorder. Instuments of such would be one long neck acoustic guitar, one classical guitar, and two dooping soul. Their session was recorded at the patio with some birds tweeking, kids bicycle bell, noisy cars, pedestrians and small noises from the kitchen. Thanks to Jason’s indie label, they were able to produce good music in a large production.
JASMINE LOW (JAZ)
www.jasminelow.com/girl_gungho.html
Jaz performs by reading her compilation of short stories from a genre she calls ‘faction’. Stories based on fact, laced with fiction. Branded a migrant no matter where she is, Jasmine holds close to her heart her Malaysian citizenship and closer, her Australian permanent residence while she straddles the fence of identity.
Having spent her ‘formative’ 20s in Sydney, Australia, Jasmine returned to Kuala Lumpur in 1997 at her mother’s displeasure to discover what Malaysia could unfold for her in her 30s.
Back in Sydney in 2002, she found herself devouring the local music scene at endangered dingy pubs which would soon be converted to trendy snazzy clubs with kitchens serving satay, laksa and barramundi chips. A year later and she’s back at the muddy estuary. This time, as founder/organiser of Doppelganger open mic events, disco-lover, as well as the founder and managing director of new media / marketing communication consultancy and a imminent writer.
She still battles with Mom on living in Kuala Lumpur. Mom insists Sydney offers a better lifestyle, better curry laksa, better cheese and weather. The two share a love-hate relationship until today. Jasmine is currently working on an audio book compilation titled ROOMS.
